Grip-Like Vice started life as a high energy power-pop trio in 2013 and evolved into a distinctive and original quartet developing their own brand of progressive art-pop.
The band list XTC, St. Vincent, They Might Be Giants, Everything Everything, The Wannadies, Elliot Smith and Elvis Costello (whose ‘Party Girl’ lyrics inspired the group’s name) as influences, but the chief inspiration is a desire for originality. “We want to avoid the safer, lowest common denominator… we’re trying to do something different.”
The common thread throughout Grip-Like Vice's evolution has been melodic, carefully-crafted and catchy songs delivered with drive and urgency, fusing rowdy rock energy with the unpredictability and lyrical intelligence of quality English pop. Their EP’s have received critical praise, and the musicianship, tight performances and strong harmony vocals of their stage performances mark them out as one of the most interesting and enjoyable live acts around.
In recent years founder member Beren Matthews has also emerged as an exceptional guitarist, lending his talents to pop royalty Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin's live band in headlining shows in Tokyo and London. Matthews also appears on the duo's Star Clocks album, featuring poll-winning drummer Gavin Harrison.

reviews
"The crowning glory of the EP is one of the most enjoyable songs I've heard in years: 'With The Band', a glorious slice of high-energy English pop-rock, boasts a refreshingly non-standard chord sequence, great vocals, witty lyrics, a tremendous chorus (including a ‘B’ section worthy of The Beatles) and a perfect pop structure. It’s a hit, no two ways about it." Sound On Sound
